Starting on September 23, 2007 Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) will air The War, a seven-part series directed and produced by Ken Burns and Lynn Novick. The staff inteviewed many U. S. veterans of army, naval and air foces in World War II to give their personal accounts of their combat service. Quentin C. Aanenson, a pilot whose task was to attack ground targets, was one of them.
He flew Thunderbolts in the 366th Fighter Group of the Ninth Air Force from June to December 1944. His plane was hit damaged by ground fire twenty times and was even set on fire three times. Twice he had to make emergency landing. After completing his operational tour he was assigned to U. S. ground units as a coordinator of fighter-bomber support in the Battle of the Bulge.
Mr. Aanenson's narrative is complemented with gun camera footage of such high-quality that one may think this can't be authentic:-) (please watch the video clips at the PBS's site). For instance, single figures of soldiers escaping from a vehicle that has just been strafed can be seen...
By the way, Quentin C. Aanenson made a three-hour documentary entitled A Fighter Pilot's Story, which is based on his war experience in 1993. It has been broadcast several times throughout the United States.
